There are passages in Scripture that offend our reasoning. How could a holy God remain faithful to Israel after repeated rebellion, preserve David’s covenant after adultery and murder, or call the Church His own despite centuries marked by corruption, abuse and injustice? Questions like these have caused many to doubt God’s holiness, wisdom and even His goodness. Yet the problem is not with God but with the conclusions we draw when we interpret His character through the failures of people. God has never measured His purposes by the perfection of those He appoints.
God does more than call individuals; He establishes covenant pathways through which His redemptive purposes unfold across generations. Even our birth is part of this — an ordained entry point, independent of our circumstances or the choices of those who came before us. Despite the mix of inherited blessing and the consequences of evil covenants, God makes a way through it all. Israel, David and the Church are not monuments to human faithfulness but testimonies to God’s. He never compromises His holiness to preserve His covenant, nor does He abandon it because of human failure. He judges sin, calls people to repentance and remains faithful to what He has established because He cannot deny Himself. His faithfulness is not an endorsement of human failure or the approval of evil — it is the proof and assurance that His purposes are too established to be undone by it.
“If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.”
2 Timothy 2:13 NKJV
This changes far more than how we read Scripture; it changes how we see God and even ourselves. If we interpret God’s character through human failure, we will question His ways. If we interpret our own lives through our failures or the failures of others, we will question His purpose for us. Yet Jesus Christ is the greatest testimony that God’s redemptive plan cannot be stopped. Through generations marked by rebellion, corruption and resistance, God faithfully brought forth the promised Messiah, proving that nothing can overturn what He has ordained. The same God who remained faithful throughout history is still faithful to complete what He has begun in those who chose to trust in Him. That is not merely wisdom. It is the majesty of God.
Action Steps:
Prayer:
Father, thank You that Your faithfulness never depends on human perfection. Open our eyes to see Your ways above our reasoning, Your holiness above our questions and Your covenant faithfulness above human failure. Guard us from drawing conclusions about Your character through the actions of people, and from measuring our own calling by our past mistakes. Teach us to trust that what You establish, You faithfully sustain, and that Your purposes endure because You remain true to Yourself. Fill us with awe at Your wisdom, Your justice and Your mercy, and help us walk confidently in the pathway You have prepared for us through Jesus Christ. In His name, Amen.
Shalom!
