Sharing is caring!
Most of us have watched someone step into a role they were not yet ready for — and we have quietly watched the strain and stain that followed. Perhaps we have been that person ourselves. The title arrived, the responsibility landed, and somewhere in the gap between the two, something began to fracture. What we rarely name in those moments is that the problem was not the person’s capability; it was their formation. God does not rush people into authority because authority carried without formation damages both the person who bears it and what they are meant to govern. Authority was never designed to be carried ahead of maturity.
“An inheritance gained hastily at the beginning will not be blessed at the end.”
Proverbs 20:21 NKJV
Scripture consistently shows restraint in the way God entrusts responsibility — not because He doubts the person, but because He understands what the weight of it requires. Image and likeness are therefore held together with purpose.
When image and likeness remain together, dominion stays fruitful and life giving. When they are separated, authority becomes unstable and, ultimately, dangerous. Authority flows from image, but it is shaped, restrained and safeguarded by likeness.
This is why God moves a person through intimacy before instruction, and establishes relationship before responsibility is ever placed on them. Formation is not a delay; it is protection unto perfection. True authority does not rush to act, dominate or control. It expresses alignment. What endures is not the authority we take, but the authority we are prepared to carry and steward.
Action Steps:
Prayer:
Father God, You are patient and purposeful in the way You entrust responsibility. We acknowledge that authority without formation can harm both people and purpose. Work within us to form character that can carry responsibility with wisdom and restraint. Align our inner life with Your ways, so that what we express outwardly reflects Your nature. Teach us to value preparation over position, and transformation over acceleration, that our influence may be life giving and secure. Amen.
Shalom!
