Sharing is caring!
Here is a truth that unsettles us precisely because it meets us within the ordinary rhythms of everyday life: much of the strain we carry does not arise from working hard, but from attempting to carry life as owners rather than as stewards. We tighten our grip on time, outcomes, resources, and even people, quietly persuading ourselves that control will keep us safe. Hard work does matter – discipline, sacrifice, and effort are good and necessary. – but they were never designed to shoulder what only trust in God was meant to carry. Pressure begins to build when our lives subtly turn towards self-sufficiency, and the weight we were never meant to bear settles across our shoulders.
To steward is to labour faithfully with what did not begin with us and does not depend on us to exist. Life itself is received before it is ever managed. Our breath, our souls, our capacity, opportunity, and direction all originate beyond us, yet they are entrusted to us with intention and care. God, as the owner, holds final authority and defines purpose; we, as stewards, live in response to that authority. The first and most significant stewardship entrusted to us is our own soul, and right stewardship is simply – alignment in life as God designed it to function.
“Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine; the soul who sins shall die.”
Ezekiel 18:4 NKJV
Strain begins to emerge when ownership quietly takes centre stage in our thinking – when accumulation replaces alignment and control slowly displaces trust. This way of living promises security, yet over time it diminishes life, draining peace, distorting purpose, and fragmenting what was meant to remain whole. God’s way is different, and in love He calls His stewards back to order and account. Jesus shows us how to live this way. He did not control people, cling to power, or force outcomes. He trusted the Father, obeyed Him fully, and lived from that trust. This is where life begins to lighten again – not because responsibility disappears, but because it is carried in the right order, with God as owner and us as willing participants in His care.
Action Steps:
Prayer:
Father God, You are the giver and sustainer of life, and we acknowledge that nothing we hold truly originates with us. Forgive us for the ways we have taken ownership of what was meant to be stewarded, and for the strain that has produced within us and through us. Bring light to the places where we have been driven by control, fear, or the need to secure ourselves. Teach us again how to live as stewards, beginning with our own souls. Through Jesus, restore what has been fragmented, reorder what has been distorted, and lead us away from paths that quietly diminish life. We place our lives back into Your hands, confident that You are faithful, wise, and good. Amen.
Shalom!
