Every limit God has ever given was for our good. When He said no to something, He was not holding us back from a better life. He was holding us back from a worse one, the kind we cannot see coming until we are already in it. A father who tells his child not to run into the road is not restricting the child’s freedom. He is protecting a life he loves more than the child yet understands. That is what God has always been doing through what He asks of us.
“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.”
Matthew 5:17, NKJV
Some of what looks like God’s order is not actually His. Over time we build systems around His words, rules that sound spiritual but carry a weight He never asked anyone to carry. Those systems can look like devotion while quietly training people to perform instead of trust and abide. God’s true order protects our identity, our authority and our future. It protects them because none of the three can hold up on their own. There is a real enemy who benefits whether we abandon God’s order or turn it into a burden, because both pull us away from the one place we are actually safe. God’s true laws and directions keep us close to Him, and safe from becoming something neither He nor we were ever meant to be.
Disobedience and sin give the enemy ground in our lives and spheres, and things will begin to shift in ways we do not consciously control. What feels better, more pleasurable or more comfortable in the moment can turn out to be a far worse trade than we ever knew we were making. This is why closeness to God is not a nice extra for the spiritually keen. It is the only place identity does not have to be defended, authority is not a performance, and the future is not a gamble. Aligning with what God has established is how we keep that ground out of the enemy’s hands. So the real question is not whether God’s standards are too much to keep. It is, what has God already established in our lives that we would be wise to honour.
Action Steps:
Prayer:
Father, show me where I have mistaken Your protection for restriction, where I have carried a weight that never came from You, and where I have mistaken Your patience for permission. Help me see Your standards and Your love as one and the same thing, and help me tell the difference between what You have established and what is not truly in line with You. Show me what You are asking me to honour right now. And please open the eyes of my understanding to see it as Your love and for my good. Amen.
Shalom!
