Now more than ever, the wisdom and wardship of sobriety is needed in our lives. Sobriety is what ensures our senses are neither numbed nor dumbed. Without sobriety, we will not be able to accurately detect and discern good from evil, threat from safety, life from death. Sobriety is an essential safeguard.
“So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober.” 1 Thessalonians 5:6
When we hear the word ‘sober’ we often think of the absence of intoxication, recklessness and sedation, and these are true. Being sober-minded means we intentionally live free from influences that will corrupt and misrepresent our true identity, intentions and intelligence.
It takes sobriety to – Be aware, face our mess with honesty about our state of mind, well-being, wrongs and growth progress.
It takes sobriety to – Detect the subtle traps of evil that aim to deceive, distract, deplete, devour and divert us from what is essential, eternal and evidential.
It takes sobriety to – See beyond the camouflages of comedy, prosperity, pathos, elations, entertainment, and goodness, and recognize the truth of a thing.
It takes sobriety to – Be mindful of how we push our own personal agendas, preferences perspectives, and policies on others, instead of advocating God’s perfect plans, processes, principles, and precepts.
Being sober and walking in the direction of sobriety is our responsibility, but the grace of sobriety comes from God.
Our first job is self – Deny self, subdue flesh, resist temptations, practice humility before God and others, to facilitate our shift to a Heavenly mindset and reality.
Our second job is to use our time and energy wisely and obediently – Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, live purposely in alignment with Him, and submit willingly to His processes, as He directs and reforms us.
We have to play our part and also partner with God. Through our submission, obedience and dependence on Him, we will experience and enjoy the fullness and blessings of sobriety.
